Where to Visit
Nerja, Costa del Sol
About 15 minutes drive from Torrox Pueblo away from Malaga you will come to the bustling seaside resort of Nerja.
Founded in the 10th century during the Arab occupation of southern Spain it was originally known as Naricha. Nowadays it is famous as a seaside resort and for its caves.
Parking is either in the centre of town down to the right of the Parador or the large underground car park– follow signs for Balcón. You can also park by the Supersol supermarket; turn left at the roundabout by Barclays.
The Balcón de Europa or Balcony of Europe is a great starting point to explore Nerja and with its 500 bars and cafes finding a good, well priced lunch is not difficult.
The Balcon is an outstanding promenade along the soaring cliff edge with spectacular views of the Mediterranean and small coves and bays. The Balcon is bustling at night with street artists and entertainment, plus ice cream ladies!
To the east is Burriana beach for water sports, swimming or just topping up your tan.
The old town with its many shops provides interesting diversion. This is off to the right of the Balcon with your back to the sea. There is a weekly large market on a Tuesday. Park by Supersol and walk down that road. The market is in every street and is busy! It finishes at 2pm so get there early. Lots of the bars and cafes have ‘market day‘ specials on!

The Nerja caves are located inland at Maro, a village dating back to Roman times.
They were discovered by schoolboys looking for bats in 1959 and have proven to be a very important as well as fantastic cave system. Archaeologists have shown that they were occupied by Cro-Magnons 20,000 years ago.
On a hot afternoon they provide both cool relief and a wonderful insight into our oldest ancestors. Their beauty has to be seen to be appreciated.
In June there is a Festival Of Music and Dance held in the caves which provide a magical backdrop to ballet, classical music and singing. Top names perform and the seating is limited so we recommend enquiring about tickets well in advance.
If you choose to go into Nerja at night you can get a taxi back near to Tutti Frutti Plaza (where all the younger bars and discos are). It should cost between 12 and 17 euros depending on time.
There is a little train that takes you around the town or you can take a horse and carriage that departs from the Balcon.
